Are you considering Coaching or counselling?
This page gives you brief info on what couching is available and what to expect.
It is important to look at the various aspects to couching
Types of couching and what suits you.
It also gives you a brief run down on what you should expect if you decide to go down the more traditional route of counselling.
Coaching/Mentoring
This is the fastest growing industry in the world
What can you expect
A mentor/coach who propels you towards your goals
Holds you accountable
Builds your confidence and self esteem
Drives your passion
Listens to you
Gives you the tools to be successful
So, what can you expect from coaching or counselling?
Firstly at the very beginning you need to look at whether you want to do in-person or online? Which is better for you?
Coaching is individual and unique to each person in their journey
Once you have decided on the right type of coaching what should you expect from the coach
Your coach should
Online - This can be via Text, Phone, Email or Zoom/Webex
Online can be a good form of counselling for some as it can be easier to manage especially if you are busy and also of course Covid.
Many people feel more comfortable doing it in this way as it can feel more anonymous and therefore you can open up more.
However, some times it can also mean you divulge to much to quickly and this may make you feel uncomfortable.
That said it is worth making sure you are confident using technology such as Zoom and Webex
In-Person - This form of couching is where you arrange a time and talk to the couch.
This type of couching allows for building a relationship face to face, see the reactions of the counsellor, their body language and means you are less likely to divulge to much information to quickly, known as the Disinhibition Effect.
Confidentiality
This is an important part of coaching and covers many angles.
But in simple terms everything you discuss with a coach is confidential.
This will be in the contracts you sign at the beginning
If a coach or indeed a counsellor breaks this you can report them to their professional body.
Your coach (or counsellor) shouldn't
Discuss what you talk about outside the session unless there is a risk of harm to you or others, if this was the case they should inform you that they are going to refer to either their supervisor or another organisation
A coach (or counsellor) should NOT act on third party information. What do we mean by that?
The above are just some things that are a serious breach of confidentiality and Professionalism and can lead to investigation by their governing body.
Contracts what are they
When you have decided on a coach/counsellor you will be asked to sign contracts and we have listed below what to expect from these contracts
The contracts you sign should include things such as when the counsellor/coach is available IE working hours.
Emergency contact and this is important in case there is a need to contact someone if you become ill or there is a risk of harm
This should be discussed with you and how it will be used IE do you want the counsellor to tell your emergency contact that you are being counselled.
How many sessions you are having
